About this tool

Character limits are stricter than word limits and much easier to breach by accident: 160 for an SMS, 280 for a post, 500 for many form fields, 60 for a page title, 155 for a meta description. Being three characters over is enough for a form to refuse to submit.

You get characters with and without spaces, plus letters, digits and line counts. Enter your limit and the tool reports exactly how many characters you have left — or how far over you are — so editing becomes a matter of arithmetic rather than guesswork.

Questions people ask

Do spaces count?
Usually yes, so the with-spaces figure is the one most limits use. Both are shown.
What is a good title length?
Under about 60 characters for search results, and under 155 for a description.
Are emoji counted correctly?
They are counted as the characters the platform sees, which may be more than one per emoji.
