About this tool

The most common data leak in document sharing is a black rectangle drawn over text in a PDF editor. It looks redacted, but the text underneath is still in the file and can be copied out in seconds. Newspapers, law firms and government departments have all published documents that way.

This tool works differently. Pages are rasterised, the marked regions are painted over the pixels, and a new PDF is built from those images. There is no hidden text layer left behind, because there is no text layer at all — which is precisely the point when the information must not be recoverable.

Areas are specified as page number plus four percentages, so the same specification works on any page size and can be reused across similar documents. Always check the output before sharing, and keep the unredacted original somewhere safe.

Questions people ask

How do I find the right percentages?
Estimate from the page: left 10 and top 20 means one tenth across and one fifth down. Run it, check the result and adjust.
Can the redacted text be recovered?
No. The output contains images with the areas painted out, and no underlying text.
Why is the rest of the page no longer selectable?
The whole page becomes an image. Run OCR PDF afterwards if you need searchable text.
