About this tool

Most PDF problems come from not knowing what you are holding. Is this a scan or a real text document? Are the pages a consistent size, or has something been merged in at A5? How many pages are there really? Answering those questions first saves running the wrong tool.

The report covers the file size, page count, the dimensions of each distinct page size, whether the document is encrypted and whether a text layer is present. That last point is the one that matters most: if there is no text, you need OCR PDF before any conversion or extraction tool will produce anything.

What it's good for

  • Finding out whether a document needs OCR.
  • Checking page dimensions before printing or imposition.
  • Confirming a merged file contains all the expected pages.
  • Diagnosing why a conversion returned empty text.

Features

  • Text layer check

Tells you whether the PDF is searchable or a scan.

  • Page size breakdown

Lists each distinct page size in the document.

  • Encryption status

Shows whether the file is protected.

  • Instant

    No download and no upload.

Questions people ask

What does 'no text layer' mean?
The pages are images, so text cannot be copied or searched. Run OCR PDF to create a text layer.
Why do page sizes differ?
Usually because pages from different sources were merged. Individual sizes are listed for you.
Does it tell me if a PDF is signed?
Signature validation is not covered; open the file in a reader that verifies signatures.
