Options for Grayscale PDF

Higher numbers look sharper and create larger files.

Compression works by re-rendering each page as an optimised image, which reliably shrinks scans and image-heavy files. Text stops being selectable in the result — use Optimize PDF when you need to keep the text layer.

How to grayscale pdf

  1. 1Upload the PDF.
  2. 2Choose the output resolution.
  3. 3Convert and download the grayscale version.

About this tool

Colour printing is expensive and unpredictable: coloured highlights turn into muddy grey, and pale text becomes unreadable on a mono printer. Converting to grayscale first lets you see exactly what will come out of the machine.

Each page is converted using perceptual luminance weighting rather than a naive average, so colours keep their relative lightness and text stays contrasted. Removing colour information also shrinks the file, often substantially for pages with colour photographs or heavy branding.

What it's good for

  • Checking how a colour report will look on a mono printer.
  • Cutting print costs for a long document.
  • Reducing the size of a colour-heavy brochure.
  • Producing a neutral version of a branded document.

Features

  • Perceptual conversion

    Luminance weighting keeps contrast natural.

  • Smaller files

Removing colour data typically reduces size.

  • Print predictability

See the mono result before you print.

  • All local

    No uploads at any point.

Questions people ask

Can I switch back to colour later?
No — keep your original file. The conversion discards colour information.
Will faint colours still be readable?
Very light colours become light grey. Check the result before printing a long run.
Does it work on scans?
Yes, and scans of colour originals often shrink the most.
